Simple Moving Average

Definition

Simple Moving Average is the unweighted arithmetic mean of closing prices over a period of time. It is often used to smooth out short term fluctuations and highlight long term trends. As the calculation is done backwards, the average lags behind the last data point by as much as half of the averaging period.
