On Balance Volume

Definition

On Balance Volume, or OBV, is a volume based indicator which is calculated by cumulatively adding or subtracting the volume of a stock depending on whether the price is higher or lower that day. It is often used to confirm price moves with the assumption that the volume is high on days where the price move is in the dominant direction.
